Tekka Market

You may ask yourself: why does Tekka Market have such a name? Well, the word ‘tekka’ is actually derived from the Hokkien words Tek Kia Kha which literally means ‘foot of the small bamboos’, after all, bamboo plants once grew along the banks of Rochor Canal. Tekka Market was originally located across the road between Hastings and Sungei Road. It was then torn down in 1982 and relocated at its present site, a multi-use complex known as Tekka Centre.

As you can see, there are many different shops in Tekka Market, ranging from tailors to food stalls. The food stalls sell a variety of foods, and they even have food of other ethnic groups, such as Chinese, Malay and even Thai. Besides a hawker centre, Tekka Market is famous for its diverse wet market where the items are extremely fresh. Tekka Centre has now become a place where different ethnic groups can come and interact.
