Tan Teng Niah's Residence
This is the residence of Tan Teng Niah, one of the more prominent Chinese businessmen in Little India. It was believed that he built this colourful, eight-room Chinese villa for his wife. It is one of the last surviving Chinese villa’s in Little India and it’s history goes back to 1900.
The villa won the Singapore Institute of Architects Honourable Mention Award in 1991 after restoration works were done in the 1980s. It is said to be architecturally influenced by both Southern Chinese and European architecture.
Tan Teng Niah owned a rubber smokehouse along Kerbau Road as well as a confectionary business, a few other businesses and a few sweet-making factories along Serangoon Road.
